5th Grade Happenings

Math
Math students have been learning the vocabulary and topics for their Geometry unit. They have learned to use a protractor and are working with a compass. Next will be the Measurement Strand where they work with perimeter, area, volume, etc. The 5th graders are constantly reviewing items they have had this year. These things should help prepare them to do well on the OAA tests.

Social Studies
Social studies has been very exciting lately. We learned about the Revolutionary War and how we fought to gain independence. We studied the Declaration of Independence and will next be learning about the United States government and the Constitution. See if your child remembers the three “unalienable rights” in the Declaration of Independence.

Science
The fifth graders have been going through DARE. They are doing a great job! DARE graduation will be March 31st. The students have also been studying eclectic circuits. Students have been creating their own circuits.

Language Arts
The students continue to work with all skills. They worked on communication by interviewing partners in order to write a character sketch; they researched a Revolutionary War hero, then presented a PowerPoint or skit and wrote a paper. They will continue to work on grammar skills including commas, titles, parts of speech, etc. They are also continuing to improve their reading skills.
